Reno Wideson was born in Larnaca in 1920. He started his first photography at the age of 12. Later as a civil servant in the Cyprus Administration and as an officer during the war he held positions which involved travelling all over the island. He was given the opportunity to make photography when he was appointed to the Tourist Development Office in 1949. His pictures appeared regularly in the Cyprus Calendar, tourist promotion brochures and illustrations in books, newspapers and magazines worldwide. In 1956 he was appointed Head of Films of the experimental Cyprus Broadcasting Television Service. In 1960 he joined the B.B.C. in London as Film Operations Manager. In that department he held various senior positions until 1977 when he took early retirement in order to devote more time to painting and photography. His name is a literal translation of “Evryviades” – his father’s name.
